What does the GRE verbal section test?

GRE verbal tests three skills: vocabulary in context (through Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence questions), reading comprehension (through passage-based questions), and your ability to analyze and evaluate written material. It's not just a vocabulary test, and it's not just a reading test. It's both, combined with critical thinking about language.
