GRE FAQ › GRE Verbal
How do I go from 150 to 160 on verbal?
At a 150, you can have significant holes in vocabulary and rely either on really strong performance in reading comprehension across the board, or on good enough process of elimination and guesswork on vocab questions to collect the points you need.
At 160, though, you really can't make more than a small number of vocab errors, so you need a way to nearly eliminate those, largely through dedicated vocabulary study. The only people who can get away with significant vocab errors at the 160 level are those who are basically perfect on reading comprehension, and that's rare.
The jump from 150 to 160 is where vocabulary study becomes non-negotiable. You need to commit to a daily word-learning routine and build a system that ensures you retain what you learn over time.
