GRE FAQ › Writing (AWA)
How is the GRE AWA scored?
Your essay is scored by a trained human rater and by ETS's automated scoring engine (e-rater). If the two scores closely agree, your score is their average. If they don't, a second human rater scores the essay and your score is the average of the two human scores. The final score is reported on a 0 to 6 scale in half-point increments. The essay is judged on the quality of your analytical writing, not on whether the rater agrees with your position.
