What is the average GRE verbal score?

The average GRE verbal score is around 151, roughly the 50th percentile. But 'average' doesn't mean much for your application — that number is calculated across all test-takers worldwide, applying to a huge range of programs with wildly different expectations.

What's much more useful is the average GRE verbal score for the kinds of programs you're actually applying to. Look up the median scores for your specific programs and aim to be at or above that number. That's the benchmark that actually matters.
