Testing values instead of algebra — when is it faster?
Testing values (plugging in numbers) is often faster when a problem has variables in the answer choices, when the algebra involves multiple variables that are hard to isolate, or when you're checking whether a relationship holds. It's also a great backup plan when you're not sure how to set up the algebra. Try solving problems both ways during practice to build a sense of when each method is more efficient.
