How do I solve GRE algebra word problems?

Translate the words into math one piece at a time. Identify what the question is actually asking, define your variables, and set up equations before you start solving. Write down the question you're answering so you don't solve for the wrong thing. Many students can do the algebra but lose points because they answered a different question than what was asked.
