Is the GRE required for PhD programs?

Most PhD programs still require or strongly recommend the GRE, particularly in STEM fields. Some humanities and social science programs have made it optional. Since PhD admissions are highly competitive, submitting a strong GRE score can only help your application, even at programs where it's technically optional.
