GRE FAQ › Verbal Question Types

What's the difference between Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence?

The core difference: text completion questions require exactly one correct word per blank. Sentence equivalence questions require exactly two answers per blank. Both question types require you to match contextual clues the same way you would in text completions, but sentence equivalence answers must also be "partners" — the two resulting sentences need to have equivalent meanings. Not necessarily identical, but close enough to convey the same overall idea.

This pairing requirement is what makes SE questions unique. You're not just looking for words that fit the blank individually — you're looking for two words that fit the blank AND produce sentences with matching meanings.
