GRE FAQ › Verbal Question Types
How many Reading Comprehension questions are on the GRE?
The typical breakdown across both verbal sections:
Section 1 (12 questions): 3 text completions (one 1-blank, one 2-blank, and one 3-blank), a reading comprehension passage with 2–3 questions, 4 sentence equivalence questions, and another reading comprehension passage with 2–3 questions. That gives you roughly 5 reading comp questions and 7 vocab-based questions.
Section 2 (15 questions): 4 text completions (one 1-blank, one 2-blank, one 3-blank, and a 4th that varies), a mix of reading comprehension passages — typically one with 1 question, two with 2 questions, and one with 3 questions — and 3 sentence equivalence questions about three-quarters through. That gives you roughly 8 reading comp questions and 7 vocab-based questions.
Across both sections: about 13 reading comp questions and 14 vocab-based questions out of 27 total. This can vary slightly from test to test, but it's a reliable framework for knowing what to expect.
