How long should I study for the GRE?

Every student's situation is unique, and reaching your goal scores usually takes longer than people expect. There is no general answer to how long it takes to study for the GRE — it depends entirely on your starting score, your goal score, your strengths and weaknesses, and how much daily time you have to study.

That said, most students study for at least three to six months. For students who need more than a 20-point combined improvement across both sections, it generally takes more than six months.

One important thing to understand: points of improvement are not all equal. Improving from a 140 to a 150 on a section is a very different challenge — and typically much faster — than improving from a 150 to a 160, even though both are 10-point jumps. You cannot extrapolate linearly. If 5 points took you two months, it does not follow that 10 points will take four. It doesn't work that way.
