GRE FAQ › Timing, Pacing & Strategy
What is the two-pass / three-pass system for pacing?
It's a strategy where you work through the section in passes instead of straight through. On your first pass, answer the questions where you immediately see a path to the answer. These are your bargains, the questions where you get the best rate of trading time for accurate answers. Skip anything that doesn't click quickly and mark it for later.
On your second pass, go back to the marked questions and work through them with the time you've saved. You're still shopping, but now you're only buying what you can afford with the time you have left, and only what still looks like the best available deal.
This works because most students who run out of time aren't working too slowly. They're spending too much time on the wrong questions too early.
